Ablation Options For Treatment of HCC - MWA and RFA

چکیده
_____________________________________________________________________________________ Abstract: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the fifth most common malignancy in the world. Although it occurs predominantly in Asia and Africa, its incidence is rising in western countries where hepatitis C infection is common. Thermal destruction has been used effectively for many years for ablation of both small liver metastases and primary lesions (HCC). RFA and MWA are similar in many ways. Both of them use heat to treat and kill tumor tissues. RFA has been used in clinical operations in the USA for years while MWA is still undergoing major improvements and is actively researched. Clinical trials for microwave liver ablation have been carried out in Asian countries. The prime goal of ablation technology is to kill the liver tumor while preserving the healthy liver tissue effectively. A study of microwave ablation and radiofrequency ablation, are summarized in this paper. The authors has been studying these techniques since long and concluded that further studies are necessary to evaluate its future role as local therapy for liver tumors as number of challenges must be overcome before ablation techniques can be considered a standard treatment for cancer. These include the development of new devices, techniques and the standardization of treatment protocols.

Percutaneous cooled-probe microwave versus radiofrequency ablation in early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma: a phase III randomised controlled trial
We read with interest the article by Bruix et al on currently available treatment options for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is now the first-line technique for HCC ablation. RFA produces tumour necrosis in situ through temperature modification. Compared with RFA, microwave ablation (MWA) is one relatively recent advancement of thermoablative technology, which sho...
متن کاملMicrowave ablation is as effective as radiofrequency ablation for very-early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma
BACKGROUND Percutaneous radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a first-line treatment for very-early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), whereas the efficacy of percutaneous microwave ablation (MWA) for very-early-stage HCC remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to clarify this issue by comparing the safety and efficacy of percutaneous MWA with percutaneous RFA in treating very-early-stage ...
متن کاملThermal Ablation of Lung Tumors: Focus on Microwave Ablation.
Background Image-guided thermal ablation can be used for the treatment of medically inoperable primary and metastatic lung cancer. These techniques are based on the heating up or freezing (cryoablation) of a volume of tissue around a percutaneous applicator that induces necrosis of the tumor. Method The English-language literature concerning thermal ablation of the lung was reviewed. Radiofrequ...

Background: The gold standard treatment for colorectal cancer liver metastases (CRCLM) is surgical resection. Unfortunately, the majority of patients with colorectal hepatic metastases are not candidates for resection. In recent years, several alternatives have emerged for patients whom are not resection candidates including modern systemic chemotherapy, targeted biologic treatments, regional t...
